What Clothing Do You Need for Ice Fishing?

Ice fishing is a popular wintertime activity, and one that requires a unique set of clothing. It is important to dress appropriately for the cold temperatures, but also for the activities you will be engaging in while out on the ice. The following are some guidelines for what clothing you need for ice fishing.

Base Layer

The base layer is the most important when it comes to staying warm. It should be made from natural materials such as wool, silk, or cotton.

These materials will help to keep you warm even when wet. Avoid synthetic materials as these can actually make you colder.

Insulation Layer

An insulation layer is necessary to trap heat and keep it close to your body. The most common insulation layer is fleece, but other options include down or synthetic insulation material.

This layer should fit snugly against your body so that it holds in the heat.

Outer Shell

The outer shell should be waterproof and breathable to keep water and wind out while still allowing sweat and moisture to escape. A jacket with a hood is recommended as it will help protect your face from harsh winds. Look for features such as taped seams, adjustable cuffs, drawstrings, and vents.

For footwear, you want something warm, waterproof, and slip-resistant. Boots that come up just below the knees are ideal as they provide extra warmth and protection from water seeping in through cracks in the ice. Make sure they have good grip on the bottom so you don’t slip on icy patches.

When ice fishing it is important to dress appropriately for both the weather conditions and activities you will be engaging in while out on the ice. The clothing needed includes a base layer of natural materials like wool or cotton; an insulation layer such as fleece; an outer shell of waterproof material; and footwear that is warm, waterproof, and slip-resistant with good grip on the bottom.
