Is Lake Okeechobee Still Good Fishing?

Fishing is a favorite pastime for many in Florida, and Lake Okeechobee is one of the most popular destinations. Stretching over 730 square miles, this vast lake is teeming with bass, panfish, and other species.

But what about the water quality? Is Lake Okeechobee still good fishing?

The short answer is yes. The lake has been monitored by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission since the mid-1800s, and they report that overall fish populations remain healthy. At any given time, anglers can expect to catch largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, catfish, and other species in various sizes.

That said, there are some concerns about the water quality of Lake Okeechobee. Over the years, agricultural runoff has caused an increase in nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus which can cause algae blooms.

These blooms can deplete oxygen levels in the water and create an environment hostile to fish species. Additionally, pollutants from urban runoff can enter the lake from areas such as cities and highways.

The good news is that local governments are taking steps to improve water quality in Lake Okeechobee. In 2013, they implemented a Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP) which aims to reduce pollutants entering the lake from agricultural runoff.

They are also increasing efforts to control urban runoff by cleaning storm drains before they enter the lake. And lastly, they are implementing more stringent regulations on boats entering Lake Okeechobee to reduce potential sources of pollution.

Conclusion:

Overall, fishing in Lake Okeechobee is still a great experience for anglers who want to enjoy some of Florida’s best fishing spots. While there are concerns about water quality due to agricultural runoff and other pollutants entering the lake from urban areas, local governments are taking steps to reduce them and ensure that Lake Okeechobee remains a safe place for recreational activities like fishing.
