Is Fluorocarbon Fishing Line Better Than Monofilament?

Fluorocarbon fishing line and monofilament fishing line have their own advantages and disadvantages when used in different fishing situations. Fluorocarbon has become increasingly popular in recent years due to its low visibility and abrasion resistance, while monofilament remains a go-to choice for many anglers due to its flexibility, stretchability, and low cost. So which type of fishing line is better?

Fluorocarbon fishing line is made from a copolymer of fluorine and carbon molecules, giving it both a higher density than monofilament and making it nearly invisible underwater. This makes it ideal for situations where clear water or spooky fish are an issue.

It also has excellent abrasion resistance, so it’s best suited for situations where you need to pull your line through tight spaces like rocks or weeds without fear of breakage. On the downside, fluorocarbon is not as flexible as monofilament, so it can be difficult to tie knots with heavier diameters.

Monofilament is made from a single strand of nylon or polyester, giving it some stretchiness that helps absorb shock when fighting large fish. It’s also much easier to tie knots with than fluorocarbon, making it ideal for beginners or anglers who need to change lures quickly. However, because of its lack of density and visibility underwater, monofilament can be more easily seen by fish.


Both fluorocarbon and monofilament have their own distinct advantages when used in different fishing situations. Whether one is better than the other really depends on the type of fishing you’re doing and the environment you’re in. In general though, if you’re looking for something with low visibility that won’t break easily then fluorocarbon may be the better choice; if you’re looking for something more flexible and easier to tie with then monofilament may be the better option.
