How Do You Cast on a Fishing Pole?

Casting on a fishing pole may seem daunting to the beginner fisherman; however, with practice, it can be easily mastered. There are two major steps to casting: the back cast and the forward cast. Once these two steps are mastered, catching fish will be a breeze.

Back Cast

To begin, hold the fishing pole in your dominant hand with your arm slightly bent. Your opposite hand should be used to hold the line.

Pull the line back towards you so that it is slightly taut. With a smooth motion, raise your arm up and over your head while simultaneously releasing the line from your opposite hand. This motion will propel the lure away from you.

Forward Cast

Once you have completed your back cast, quickly bring your arm down in front of you while simultaneously pushing forward with your thumb on top of the rod. As you push forward with your thumb release some of the line from your opposite hand. This will help propel the lure forward through the air.

Conclusion

Casting on a fishing pole can be challenging for beginners but with practice it can become second nature. Start off by mastering both steps of casting: the back cast and forward cast. With these basics mastered catching fish will be a breeze.
